2018 AGPI Convention/Puzzle Parley (Friday, July 13th – Sunday, July 15th)

The 2018 AGPI annual convention will be held July 13th-15th in Rochester, NY, in conjunction with the biennial Puzzle Parley. Combining with the Puzzle Parley, although not common, has been done before. It permits the members with an interest in puzzles to only have to attend one event this year, instead of two. It also offers all members the opportunity to choose from a greater selection of presentations, workshops and demonstrations.   The theme for this year’s event is: Games and Puzzles from Upstate New York

In putting together this year’s program, we have tried to addresses member’s concerns about previous convention: Lower hotel costs ($119/night plus tax - 25% less than last year); More time for gaming and puzzling; Greater selection of presentations and demonstrations; the addition of game workshops (as in early convention days); and game tutorials – an opportunity to learn new games .

Pre-Convention/Puzzle Parley Opportunities (Thursday, July 12th- Friday, July 13th)

Opportunity 1: An all day bus trip of Buffalo and Niagara Falls on Thursday, July 12th. The center piece of this year’s pre-convention tour is a tour of Buffalo Games. Buffalo Games is known for its quality puzzles and interesting games. The tour will also take in other sites in Buffalo (such as the Anchor Bar – the original home of Buffalo Wings, and the Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum – see http://www.pierce-arrow.com/ ) as well as visit Niagara Falls. Those who wish will have an opportunity to take a boat ride to the base of the falls on the Maid of the Mist (extra $17.35). If you want to participate on the tour, you will need to arrive at the hotel on Wednesday, July 11th, as the bus leaves for Buffalo Thursday morning at 9 a.m. sharp. The cost of the tour is $55 per person. There is a limit of 56 for the trip. Space is reserved on a first come first serve basis. If the tour fills up, those still interested will be placed on a waiting list.

Opportunity 2: The Strong National Museum of Play is making their Brian Sutton-Smith Library and Archives of Play available on Thursday, July 12th to a limited number of members interested in doing research (http://www.museumofplay.org/collections/access-collections). This is a unique opportunity to access information and items in their collection. For those wanting to do research for an article in the Quarterly, or On the Table – here’s your chance.

Opportunity 3: Informal dinner gather, Thursday evening, July 12th. Here is an opportunity to get together with friends – old and new – to catch up on what has happened over the past year. The intent is for those expressing an interest in such an informal gathering, to gather as a group and dine at a local establishment in the vicinity of the hotel. (Those on the bus tour will be back to the hotel around 6 p.m. – in time for the dinner gathering)

Opportunity 4: The Rochester Area has several Escape Rooms. This is where a group of eight or so daring souls are placed into a room, and have to solve a series of puzzles to get themselves free before time expires. The intent for a group (or groups) of folks who express an interest in such an activity to meet at the hotel and travel to a nearby site to attempt this challenge on Thursday evening, July 12th.

Opportunity 5: On Friday, July 13th, at the Strong National Museum of Play, the Strong is offering complimentary admission to attendees this Friday, instead of the usual charge of $17 per person. Convention and Parley events will be ongoing there on Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Starting at 11 a.m., professional puzzle makers will demonstrate how to cut jigsaw puzzles. There will be two VIP tours of the Museum at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for our group, and led by Strong Museum curators. Each tour will see Museum exhibits, hidden gems in the storage areas, and the Library with its unmatched archives on the history of games.

Opportunity 6: Self-guided tours of Rochester and surrounding area. Rochester offers a number of sites to see, including: The Genesee Country Village and Museum (https://www.gcv.org/visit/ ); The Jell-o Gallery (http://jellogallery.org/visit-us.html); Boat tours of the Erie Canal (http://sampatch.org/); The Letchworth State Park - “Grand Canyon of the East” (https://parks.ny.gov/parks/79/details.aspx); Tour local vineyards (https://www.casalarga.com/visit/); Visit the National Susan B. Anthony Museum & House (http://susanbanthonyhouse.org/index.php); or Visit the George Eastman House (https://eastman.org/) .

Puzzle Parley and AGPI Convention

The Convention and Puzzle Parley will have a combined reception and dinner at the hotel, Friday evening July 13th. Following the dinner will be a Show & Tell session, and the Pagey Elliott Jigsaw Puzzle Exchange. The evening will conclude with gaming and puzzling until mid-night, as well as a game tutorial where one can learn how to play new games.

The agenda for Saturday is full of presentations, demonstrations, workshops, displays, and table sales – many of these going on concurrently. Be sure to check back here in the coming weeks to see the detailed itinerary as the specifics for the day are finalized.   There will be a Dinner Speaker, Saturday evening, followed by the annual auction. Once again, the day will end late into the night with more gaming, puzzling and learning of new games.

Sunday, following the breakfast, will include a panel discussion on Games and Puzzles, information on the 2019 AGPI Convention and the annual raffle. The event will end in time for folks to check out of the hotel by noon.
